A Damschuit and a "Smalschip"

Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a seascape from a low vantage point, with a high horizon separating the sea and the sky. Two sailing ships are depicted in the rough waters: a larger vessel to the right and a smaller ship to the left. The etching technique is used for detailed line work and bold strokes. The monochrome palette enhances the contrast between the sea and the sky. Other distant sails are faintly visible against the cloudy skies.
