Joust of Peace in Leg Armor

German 16th Century

National Gallery of Art

A drawing of a jousting scene featuring armored knights on horseback. The image shows two knights colliding, their lances shattered and fragments flying. One knight is falling as if unseated during the joust, with their horse also in motion. The knights' armor is detailed with ornate patterns, and their helmets have plumes. The horses are covered with decorative cloth, one solid brown and the other striped. The drawing portrays movement and tension through effective use of lines and shading.
