Blackberries Spilling from Tin Cup

Carducius Plantagenet Ream

National Gallery of Art

This painting shows an overturned silver cup spilling blackberries on a brown surface. The berries are concentrated in the center of the painting, near the opening of the cup, although some spill out closer to us. They are black with areas of pale green at the top, and they reflect small points of light. The surface beneath the cup and berries, and the wall behind, are both mottled brown with areas of pink, yellow ochre, and dark red, with the top left corner in shadow.
