The Pass Finders, Piegan, Montana

Roland W. Reed

National Gallery of Art

This is a sepia-toned photograph of a group of people riding horses that stand on a grassy field with mountain peaks in the background. The people and horses are in a horizontal line across the photograph, all facing the left. The people have dark skin and black hair tied in two braids, many of which are adorned with long black-and-white feathers. They wear long pants, some with tassels or fringe, and many of them appear to have bare chests. The person on the far left has several strands of white beads around their neck and down their chest, and the person behind them holds a long spear. The backdrop consists of light gray mountains with snow caps against a pale sky.
