Study of Trees beside the Water (Étude d’arbres au bord d’une mare)

Louis Hector François Allemand

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a landscape with a grove of trees. The horizon is low, above the base of the tree trunks. There are tall trees with branches extending upwards, filling much of the sky. The etching technique creates varied line thicknesses, giving the trees and foliage a textured appearance. The color palette is monochromatic with shades of brown. A small body of water reflects the landscape. In the distance, the density of trees decreases, and the detailing becomes more delicate towards the edges of the image.
