Plate 37. Willhelmina Pass, from the East

Andrew Joseph Russell

National Gallery of Art

The image shows a river winding between rocky hills. The river flows from right to left and the horizon is low. The hills on both sides taper off in the distance. One hill on the left has a vertical cliff face. The scene has earthy tones, mainly browns and sepia. Near the riverbank, there is shrubbery, and further into the scene, the vegetation becomes more sparse, interspersed with rocky outcrops. The distant hills have a rough texture.
