Sword Guard (Tsuba)

Cleveland Museum of Art

The Sword Guard (Tsuba) is a circular, dark brown or black metal object with a raised rim around the edge. The object features a central hole with a distinctive shape, resembling a teardrop with the pointed end facing downwards. Surrounding the central hole is a design consisting of multiple oval and teardrop-shaped cutouts arranged in a symmetrical pattern. The cutouts form a floral motif with curved lines resembling petals. The outer edge of the object features a design of gold-colored flowers and leaves. The background of the image is dark gray, with a lighter gray gradient at the bottom.
