Kataoka Nizaemon VII and Ichikawa Yaozo III in a Confrontation Beside a Waterfall

Utagawa Toyokuni

Cleveland Museum of Art

Two men in traditional Japanese clothing, barefoot and wearing loincloth-like garments, are depicted in a dynamic stance beside a waterfall. The man on the left wears a pink garment over a black and gold striped skirt, while the man on the right wears a reddish-brown garment with a white cloth wrapped around his waist. Each man holds a sword in one hand and appears to be in motion, with the man on the left leaning forward and the man on the right leaning backward. Water splashes around their feet, and the background features a large waterfall with lines suggesting rushing water. The scene is rendered in a traditional Japanese woodblock print style with bold lines and muted colors. The men are identified as Kataoka Nizaemon VII and Ichikawa Yaozo III.
