Education of the Virgin
The Education of the Virgin by Claus Sluter: A sculpture depicting two female figures. The figure on the left is a girl with curly hair wearing a long dress and an elaborate hairstyle or headpiece. The girl on the left holds an open book with both hands. The figure on the right stands behind and to the right of the girl and wears a long robe with a head covering. The head covering drapes over the woman's head and shoulders and falls in folds down her back. The woman on the right points to a book with her right hand. The woman's face is largely covered by the head covering. The sculpture appears to be made of stone and exhibits weathering and aging effects. The base of the sculpture is flat and rectangular. The background behind the sculpture fades from dark to light gray.
