Red-Figure Column Krater (Mixing Vessel): Apollo and Goddesses with Chariot (A); Komos (Revel) (B)

Cleveland Painter

Cleveland Museum of Art

Terracotta vase with predominantly black and orange colors. The vase has a wide mouth and two handles on either side. The body of the vase is bulbous with a narrow base and a decorative foot. The vase features two distinct scenes. The main scene on the front depicts Apollo with two female figures on a chariot, likely goddesses. Apollo wears a long, flowing garment and holds the reins. The goddesses have long hair and are dressed in flowing garments. The goddess on the left plays a stringed instrument. The second scene on the opposite side shows five men, one playing a double reed instrument, and four revelers dancing or moving in a lively manner. The vase has decorative borders at the top and bottom. The decorative band around the rim showcases a leaf-like pattern. The background of the image is a gradient gray.
