New Yoshiwara (Shin Yoshiwara), from the series Famous Places in the Eastern Capital

Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Cleveland Museum of Art

Colorful Japanese woodblock print depicting a scene set at night. The scene shows a large, light blue-gray full moon taking up much of the top left of the image, against a dark blue sky. The moon appears to have a small, off-white circle at its center. Four men are shown on a path. The man on the left wears a blue outfit with a green striped robe. The man next to him wears a long blue and white striped robe. The next man wears a blue top and shorts and carries a long, thin pole over his shoulder. The last man wears a blue patterned top and shorts, sandals, and a head covering. He holds the bottom end of the long, thin pole and a green screen or curtain. There are Japanese characters in a red seal in the top right corner and on a red scroll to the right of the men. Small black Japanese characters are in the bottom right corner. The background includes a building on the left, small trees and bushes, and another building on the right. Two small white animals are visible on the ground on the right. The entire image is surrounded by a thin green border on a beige background.
