William Blake

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows a black-and-white illustration of a biblical scene. The illustration is in the center of the image and depicts a man standing on a cloud with a halo around his head. He is surrounded by rays of light and appears to be looking down at four other men who are sitting or kneeling below him. The man on the right appears to be sitting on a cloud. The four men below have long hair and beards, and are dressed in robes. The background of the illustration is a cloudy sky. There is text around the border of the illustration and at the bottom. The text at the bottom of the illustration reads, "Then a Spirit passed before my Face / the hair of my flesh stood up". There is additional text on the border that reads, "Shall a Man be more Pure than his Maker? Behold he putteth no trust in his Saints & his Angels he chargeth with Folly."
