Set of Three Panels from a Casket with Scenes from Courtly Romances

Cleveland Museum of Art

Three rectangular panels made of a light-colored material, possibly ivory, with intricate carvings depicting scenes from courtly romances. The top panel shows a man on the right holding a bow and arrow, with a dog below, and various figures and animals on the left. The middle panel features three sections with multiple small scenes, including jousting knights on horseback in the center section, and people in various activities on either side. The bottom panel shows a man on the left and a woman on the right, standing in front of a castle, with the woman holding an object. Each panel has a rope-like border on the sides and small holes around the edges, possibly for attachment. The panels are set against a plain white background. The carvings appear to be medieval in style.
