Panel from a Casket with Scenes from Courtly Romances

Cleveland Museum of Art

Rectangular panel made of light-colored stone or ivory. The panel features several scenes carved into it, divided into sections by twisted rope-like columns. The left section depicts people around a large fish on a pedestal, the pedestal on a brick platform with leaves. Above the fish are four heads. The next section shows a man on horseback holding a spear, and a dog-like creature attacking a lion, with a man on top holding an object. The next section depicts an elephant with ornate saddle and a figure on top of a brick wall on its back. The final section on the right shows a woman holding a bow and arrow. The background features leaves and plants, and the overall scene appears to represent scenes from courtly romances.
