Plaque from a Portable Altar Showing the Crucifixion

Cleveland Museum of Art

Rectangular plaque with a raised relief scene, predominantly light beige in color. The scene depicts a crucifixion with multiple figures. A central figure, bare-chested and barefoot, is nailed to a cross with arms outstretched. To the left, a figure holds a hammer and appears to be nailing the central figure to the cross. To the right, another figure holds a bucket and a large hammer or club. On the far left, a figure with a head covering and long robes stands with hands clasped. On the far right, another figure with a halo, long hair, and long robes stands with hands clasped. Above the central figure on the cross, two other heads are carved: one appears angry or upset, and the other looks downward. The plaque appears to be made of stone or ivory and has a rough texture. The edges are somewhat uneven. The background behind the plaque is flat and gray.
