Bacchanalian Relief

Cleveland Museum of Art

The Bacchanalian Relief by an unknown artist depicts a stone carving on a dark wooden base. The carving is low relief and rectangular with a rounded corner on the right side. The carving shows a scene with multiple figures, some partially nude. A vine with grapes runs horizontally across the top. To the right, a figure resembling a panther or a lion-like creature with a human-like face is carved. Several human figures are positioned under or near the vine. The stone is grey with patches of beige. The background is dark gray and transitions to lighter gray at the bottom. The overall scene depicts revelry and a connection to Bacchus, the Roman god of wine.
