Section of an Illustrated Tale of Genji Poetry Contest

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts a traditional Japanese-style illustration with accompanying text. The illustration features two people; on the left is a woman reclining on a surface with her head on her right hand facing right, wearing a traditional Japanese garment with black sleeves and a white body. Her long black hair falls over her chest and down her back. The woman's body is mostly outlined. On the right, a man sits cross-legged facing the woman, wearing a traditional Japanese robe and a black headpiece, with one hand to his mouth. The man's body is similarly outlined. The background features dense Japanese writing in black ink filling most of the image except on the right side, where there are approximately eight columns of text on a slightly darker beige area; a darker horizontal line runs behind and above the head of the reclining woman. The paper background is beige with darker edges. The title is "Section of an Illustrated Tale of Genji Poetry Contest" and the artist is unknown.
