Fragment of Bodhisattva Head

Cleveland Museum of Art

The stone sculpture depicts a head of a Bodhisattva by an unknown artist. The head is angled slightly to the left. The sculpture is made of rough, speckled brown stone. The face has a serene expression with eyes closed. The eyebrows are thin and arched. The nose is straight and proportional to the rest of the facial features. The lips are thin and slightly upturned. A horizontal line runs across the forehead. The top of the head has a textured, ridged surface resembling hair. The background is dark at the top and lightens towards the bottom in a gradient from black to grey.
