Leaf from a Book of Hours: Adoration of the Magi (recto)

Cleveland Museum of Art

Colorful medieval-style illustration of the Adoration of the Magi. The scene depicts a kneeling man presenting a dish to the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. The Virgin Mary sits on the left, wearing a blue dress and gold head covering, holding baby Jesus. Three kings stand behind her, one black and two white, wearing ornate robes and hats, holding gifts. An angel stands behind the Virgin Mary. The scene is framed by a decorative border with blue, gold, and red elements, including cherubs, flowers, and tassels. The border has a shell design at the bottom with three putti. The background shows a landscape with buildings, hills, and a blue sky. The illustration is on a beige-colored parchment.
