Design for a Fresco of an Artist's Tomb in the Certosa of Bologna (recto)
The drawing depicts a tomb design with a large archway. A semicircular niche is at the top of the archway. Inside the niche is a sculpture of a man reclining on a table-like structure. He has his right arm raised and a tool, possibly a sculptor's chisel, in his left hand. Two angels are on either side of the sculpture. One appears to be playing a horn and the other seems to be sitting. Below the niche is a rectangular empty space. On the left side of the archway is an angel playing a trumpet. On the right side of the archway, in a lower niche, is another figure. It is standing with its right arm outstretched holding a circle, possibly a crown. The figure holds a large cross in its left hand. There appears to be a black and white marble floor. A red marble sarcophagus sits on top of the floor in front of the lower niche. The sarcophagus appears to be on top of carved feet. A green plant or trees are depicted in front of the tomb.
