The Elephant of Maharana Jai Singh of Mewar (r. 1680–98) Catches a Horse by the Tail
The painting depicts a scene with a large gray elephant in the center, adorned with a colorful blanket featuring yellow, orange, blue, and red patterns, along with gold accents and a red and gold border. The elephant is moving to the right, with its trunk extended towards a brown horse ridden by a man wearing a white shirt, pink pants, and a yellow turban. The elephant rider wears a red turban, a bare torso, and a patterned cloth around his waist. He appears to be holding a stick or whip in his right hand. Four men are running around the elephant: one on the bottom left wears an orange tunic and white turban; another on the bottom center wears a purple tunic and has a pink turban; the third on the bottom right wears a brown tunic and has a gray turban; and the artist does not depict a fourth man's upper body. The background of the painting is green, with a red border featuring a thin yellow line. Two white arches are visible on either side of the painting. Black text in a foreign language is written at the top center.
