Cranes and Pines in Moonlight from Sketch Album

Kawanabe Kyōsai

Cleveland Museum of Art

An ink painting on beige paper depicts a landscape with a pine tree and a crane. The background contains a large off-white area on the left and a lighter off-white area on the right. The pine tree is on the left, positioned at an angle with its trunk coming from the bottom-center and branches extending to the top-left. The tree has a thick trunk covered with short horizontal lines; the branches have short curved lines indicating pine needles. A small cluster of pine needles and a trunk are in the bottom-left corner. A large jagged rocky outcropping with pine trees is on the right side. A white crane with a black head and tail stands on top of the outcropping, facing left. Black Japanese calligraphy is on the right side; a small red seal is below the calligraphy. The paper is two pages that are bound together.
