Pedestal

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

"Pedestal" by an unknown artist. The pedestal is made of dark-colored material, possibly wood or stone, with a flat square base. The base has a decorative border around the bottom edge. The main body of the pedestal is a truncated pyramid shape with four flat sides, tapering towards the top. The pedestal features intricate carvings and inlays on all sides. A shield-like motif on the front contains a profile portrait. A circular carved motif adorns the center front. The pedestal's top section has a narrower, square shape with a decorative border. A marble slab forms the top, which is flat and roughly octagonal in shape. The slab overhangs the pedestal slightly on all sides. The background of the image is light gray.
