Sunset

John Frederick Kensett

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Sunset by John Frederick Kensett: The painting depicts a seascape at sunset. The sky occupies the top two-thirds of the painting and is blue at the top with scattered clouds tinged with pink. A thick band of clouds stretches across the sky, also pink-tinged. Below the clouds, the sky transitions to yellow, then orange-pink near the horizon. The sun is a white-yellow orb in the center of the painting. The lower third of the painting shows a calm body of water with gentle waves breaking on a rocky shoreline in the foreground and an island or peninsula on the right. The water is dark blue-gray near the bottom and lighter near the horizon. A small section of a rocky outcropping juts into the bottom-left corner.
