40 and 50 (Man and Woman Seated) (from Sketchbook)

James McNeill Whistler

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Black and white sketch on aged paper, featuring three sketches. The top sketch is a light gray pencil drawing on a rectangular piece of paper pasted onto the larger paper. The top sketch shows four people standing around a table. The man on the left is shirtless. The top right person wears a hat. The bottom two sketches are smaller, darker drawings. The bottom left sketch shows a man sitting at a table, a woman standing to his right, and another woman standing on the left. The bottom right sketch shows a woman sitting on the left and a man sitting on the right. The woman sits in a low-backed chair. The man sits in an armchair with his right leg crossed over his left. The man and woman appear to be middle-aged. The numbers '40 and 50' are written under the bottom right sketch.
