Capri, 1904 (from Sketchbook)

Mary Newbold Sargent

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a black and white sketch of a seascape. The sketch is on two pages that are side by side, with a thin vertical line down the middle. The top of the sketch shows a dark line which fades to white in the middle. Dark smudges are present at the top. The bottom two-thirds of the sketch is white with a darker area near the bottom of the line in the middle. There are two dark smudges across the bottom third of the sketch. A dark line depicting the horizon sits across the middle of the image. On the horizon are two areas with several rounded dark peaks. The one on the left appears larger and closer. The peaks on the right are smaller and appear to be in the distance. The peaks on the left are more defined and detailed. The peaks on the right are less detailed. The right side has a signature in the bottom corner. The signature appears to say "Capri" and "Sei. 04". The writing is difficult to read.
