The left page features a tree with a large trunk and branches extending upwards and to the right, occupying the left two-thirds of the image. The right page depicts a mountain range with a few lines suggesting hills or mountains in the distance. The sketch is rendered in pencil on a light gray background. There are some illegible handwritten notes in the bottom-right corner, including a date: "Sept 1871". The title and artist are written in the bottom-right corner: "Gate of the Highlands, Mohonk".
