Study of a Ship and Rowboat (from Sketchbook)

Albert Bierstadt

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a sketch of a ship and a rowboat. The sketch is drawn in pencil on white paper. The paper is rectangular with rounded corners and a slight shadow around the right and bottom edges. The ship is drawn on the right side of the paper, facing to the left. It has three masts with sails that are not filled in. The hull of the ship is also not filled in, but the lines suggest it has a flat bottom and a curved top. To the left of the ship, there is a small rowboat with an oar inside. The rowboat is also drawn with simple lines, and it appears to be floating on the water, although the waterline is not visible. The background of the image is plain white.
