Thomas Sully

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image is a sketch with six human figures drawn in pencil. The paper the sketch is on is light gray. There are two figures in the top half. The figure on the left appears to be sitting on the edge of a surface with left leg bent at the knee and right leg dangling. The figure's right arm extends to the right and the left arm bends at the elbow with the hand raised to the head. The figure on the top right sits on a chair or bench with both arms resting on a surface. The bottom half contains four figures. Two figures are on the left side. The figure on the far left sits and faces right. The second figure from the left also faces right and appears to be standing or sitting on a lower surface than the seated figure. They look out a window. Two figures are on the right. A female figure sits, facing right with a child on her lap. The child plays with her left hand, which she holds in front of her. A seated male and female look at a book held by the male. The male's head tilts to the right. The female's right arm rests on the book and her left arm rests on her lap. The lines forming the figures are mostly unshaded.
