Blade and Mounting for a Sword (Katana)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A long, curved Japanese sword with a shiny metal blade and a wrapped handle is displayed on a clear stand. The blade is silver with a slight curve and tapers to a point at the tip. The handle has a brown and textured wrapping near the blade and a metal piece a third of the way down. A second, thicker metal piece encircles the bottom end of the handle. Underneath the sword on a wooden stand is a black scabbard with a gold design along its length. A round metal piece rests on the stand between the sword and scabbard. The background is a plain off-white wall.
