Elbow Defense (Couter)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The elbow defense, also known as a couter, features a weathered metal construction. It consists of a curved, cylindrical piece that covers the upper arm, to which two rounded, overlapping plates are attached. The plates are positioned to protect the elbow, with one plate slightly larger than the other. A small rivet is visible on the upper portion, securing the plates to the arm covering. The entire piece exhibits a gray patina with spots of lighter and darker shades, indicating age and wear. The background of the image is a plain light grey color.
