Sword Guard (<i>Tsuba</i>) Depicting Eagle Preying on Monkey (猿捕食猛禽図鐔)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The metal object is square with rounded corners. A large bird of prey with spread wings and sharp talons descends towards a monkey on the lower right. The bird has blue eyes and gold-colored feathers. The monkey sits on a branch under a leafy limb. The metal object background is dark gray with a gold border. A large, rounded rectangular hole sits vertically in center. A smaller oval hole sits to the left. The right side has an oddly shaped hole resembling a figure. The metal object exhibits a darker patina in areas and a shiny gold where the designs sit. Small orange numbers are printed vertically on the left.
