He holds a scepter in his right hand and a shield in his left. The shield features a cross and a number. The horse has a decorated face and a long tail. The horse's harness is ornate and includes a saddle blanket with the number. The coin's outer rim bears an inscription in a circle with small dots between the words and along the edge. The text at the top reads "MAXIMILIANVS. DEI GRA" and at the bottom reads "SEMPER AVG. ARCHIDVX. AVSTRIE". The year "1599" is at the bottom center.
