Pair of Sword-Grip Ornaments (Menuki)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows two gold-colored metal ornaments. The ornaments are shaped like a pair of sword-grip decorations. They are identical in design and are placed one on top of the other, but not directly aligned. The top one is turned slightly to the right. Each ornament is roughly horizontal and has a protrusion on each end. The protrusions on the left are spherical in shape and the ones on the right are pointed. The central sections of the ornaments feature a raised design with a leafy appearance. A central figure appears to be riding a horse. The horse and rider are surrounded by foliage and other decorative elements. The background of the image is a plain gray color.
