Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Sword Guard (Tsuba) is circular and made of dark brown metal with a mottled appearance. A large oval shape dominates the center, featuring a teardrop-shaped cutout. A smaller oval cutout is positioned to the left. The surface is adorned with intricate designs, including swirling patterns, gold-colored bamboo leaves, and two figures. One figure, on the bottom left, holds a spear-like object and appears to be riding a horse or other animal, while the other figure, on the top right, resembles a demon or ogre with a spiky hairpiece. Gold accents are used throughout the design.
