Double-Barreled Side-by-Side Flintlock Shotgun

Joseph Manton & Son, British, London 1834–1838

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Double-barreled side-by-side flintlock shotgun. The gun has a dark brown wooden stock with a glossy finish. The fore-end is slender and tapering. The butt is wide and flat. The gunmetal is silver with a slight tarnish; the cocking mechanism and trigger are intricately crafted. The two barrels are side-by-side and smooth-bore; the muzzles flare slightly. The frizzen and pan are on the right side; the frizzen is held closed by a spring-loaded mechanism. The gun has two silver escutcheons on the side. The cocking mechanism features two cocks, one for each barrel. The gun sits horizontally with the muzzle pointing right. The background behind the gun is light gray with a slight vignette.
