Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The sword guard, or tsuba, is circular and made of dark brown metal with a weathered appearance. The guard has a central, vertically oriented, keyhole-shaped cutout. There are two oval cutouts on either side of the keyhole-shaped cutout. A figure of a man with a long beard sits cross-legged on the bottom right. A bird with its neck extended is on the bottom left. There are various etched designs throughout. Gold flecks are scattered throughout. The background behind the tsuba is plain white.
