Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The sword guard, or 'Tsuba', is a circular metal piece. The guard has a predominantly black center with a teardrop-shaped cutout in the middle and two oval cutouts on either side. The circular outer section is made of a metal with a bronze or copper color. This section has a leaf pattern etched into it. The etched leaves are black with gold-colored veins. The background of the etched section is black. Gold-colored leaves are applied to the black background. The guard appears to have a patina, with varying shades of brown, gray, and blue visible on its surface.
