Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image features a sword guard, specifically a Tsuba. The Tsuba is a rusty brown color with darker brown spots and lines scattered across it. It has a distinctive shape, resembling a rounded square with curved protrusions on each side. There are two holes in the center, one oval-shaped and the other more elongated and teardrop-shaped. The Tsuba features a design of a flowering tree on the right side, rendered in gray with a black trunk and branches. The tree's flowers and buds are depicted in a simple, stylized manner. On the left side, there are several curved lines in gray and gold. The background of the image is a plain light grey color.
