In the Mountains of Tōtomi Province (Tōtomi sanchū), from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Katsushika Hokusai

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a Japanese woodblock print featuring a large, inclined, rectangular object. The object is supported by four metal A-frame structures and has a blue fringe at the lower right end. A man in a blue headscarf and brown clothing rides the object. Three other men are present in the scene: one stands near the base of the structure on the left, another near the base on the right, and a third on the left near a low table. The background features a mountain with a pointed peak on the left, and rolling hills with trees on the right. The sky is blue with clouds, and smoke or dust emanates from the right side of the inclined object and behind the mountain. A vertical rectangle with Japanese characters is located in the upper left corner. The color palette includes shades of blue, green, brown, and beige.
