Tatekawa in Honjō (Honjō Tatekawa), from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)

Katsushika Hokusai

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a traditional Japanese woodblock print of a construction site. A body of water runs through the middle, surrounded by buildings and trees on the far side. On the near side, three men in traditional clothing work on a building frame made of wood. One man stands on top of a brick wall to the left, another holds a plank on a ramp over the water, and the third throws something. The background includes a mountain range and a blue sky that fades to yellow near the horizon. A large mountain, covered in greenery and snow, is on the right side.
