Ryogoku Hanabi

Utagawa Hiroshige

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a woodblock print of a bridge over water with boats underneath. The bridge is elevated on tall supports and runs from the left side to the top right. It has a railing along its length and appears to be made of wood. There are several boats on the water below the bridge, some with people in them and some with large clusters of pink lanterns. The water is blue and there are distant mountains on the horizon. The sky is gray and there are pink fireworks exploding in the top center. The print has a beige border around it, with some Japanese writing in the top-right corner and on the left side. The overall impression is one of a traditional Japanese scene, possibly during a festival or celebration.
