The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a man and woman in traditional Japanese clothing. The man is standing on the left, wearing a striped robe; his robe is red-brown with stripes of various widths in dark red-brown, light red-brown, white and black. He has a black topknot and is turned slightly to his right with his head bowed. The woman sits on the right, kneeling on the floor in a crouched position. She wears a light orange robe with small white polka dots. She has black hair and a black hat with protruding sticks on top. Her hair is pulled back. She has her left hand raised towards the man. The background consists of solid light brown color behind the figures; a darker area possibly representing clothing or a pillow is on the right.
