Large Covered Box

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Large Covered Box by Leach, Bernard. Ceramic box with a rounded body, short cylindrical foot, and domed lid with a small finial on top. The box and lid are primarily white with brown glaze. The lid features a brown line below a series of vertical radiating lines around the circumference. The body of the box has a band of brown around the top and bottom, with a floral design in the middle. The floral design consists of a vine-like pattern with rounded leaves and flowers. The box is decorated with a technique that resembles sgraffito or slip-trailing. The box and lid are sitting on a beige surface in front of a beige wall.
