Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The statue depicts Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, a male figure with a serene expression. He has a crown on his head, which is tall and intricately designed with a rounded shape at the top. The crown has a circular design in the center. He wears a long cloth wrapped diagonally across his bare chest and a long skirt. A cloth belt cinches at his waist. His right arm is bent at the elbow with the hand extended outward, palm up. His left arm is also bent at the elbow, but the lower part of the arm is missing. The figure has a serene facial expression with eyes closed and stands barefoot on a black rectangular base. The statue appears to be made of dark-colored metal, possibly bronze or copper, with visible signs of aging and wear.
