Tile with Impressed Figure of Emaciated Ascetics and Couples Behind Balconies

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The rectangular tile is made of clay and features a raised design. The top section has a row of seven heads with rounded faces in profile, facing right. Below the row of heads is a row of rectangular holes. The bottom section contains two square panels. The left panel depicts a figure with long hair sitting cross-legged in a meditative pose with hands on knees, facing left. The right panel depicts a figure with long hair sitting cross-legged in a meditative pose. A symbol resembling the number 2 and three vertical lines are between the two panels. Behind the two figures are balconies with people. Two figures on the right are visible behind the right-hand ascetic. The tile has a rough texture and appears to be old.
