Scroll of Deities of the Diamond World Mandala

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Scroll of Deities of the Diamond World Mandala by an unknown artist depicts a long, aged beige-colored scroll with nine circular drawings of seated figures. The circular drawings are arranged in three rows, with four in the top and bottom rows and one in the middle row. The seated figures are drawn in black ink and appear to be meditating. Each figure sits cross-legged on a lotus flower and has their hands placed in their lap or on their knees. The figures wear robes and have a halo drawn around their head. The two bottom left and right figures sit on a double lotus flower. The top and bottom rows have three complete circular figures on the left and one on the far right that is partially cut off. The large middle figure sits on a multi-petaled lotus flower. There are foreign characters written in black ink around each circular figure and to the right of the large middle figure. The scroll appears to be aged, with visible discoloration and stains throughout.
