Tachibana Gyokuzan

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Cylindrical case with rounded ends, made of light brown material, possibly wood or lacquer, featuring two distinct designs. The left side of the case depicts a man with long hair and a traditional Japanese robe, holding a staff or object in his right hand, and a flowing fabric or object in his left hand. He wears blue and white clothing with red accents. The right side of the case shows a man with a bald head and a long white beard, dressed in traditional Japanese attire, holding a staff in his right hand. He sits on a blue wavy line, possibly representing water. The background of both designs features horizontal black lines, and a red seal or stamp is visible on the right side. The case appears to have a black handle or cord at the top and a white rope at the bottom.
