Landscape

Sōami

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Landscape by Sōami, a serene and misty scene featuring mountains in the background with a range of peaks and slopes shrouded in fog. In the middle ground, a body of water is depicted with low-lying fog or mist hovering just above its surface. Three boats are on the water; one in the distance to the left with a single figure rowing, and two closer to the viewer on the lower left with figures huddled in them. The right side of the painting shows a shoreline with trees and small buildings nestled among them. The artwork is presented on a beige background with a wide golden border that features a repeating pattern of lighter gold designs. A red seal or stamp is visible in the lower right corner of the painting.
