Black Shōki, the Demon Queller

Katsushika Hokusai

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Black figure of a man with long hair, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing, possibly a kimono, with a sword at his side. The man appears to be in motion, with his body leaning forward and his right leg lifted off the ground. He wears a facial expression that appears to be one of anger or determination. His right hand grasps the hilt of the sword that hangs from his left side. The figure is set against a beige background with a green border. The border features a decorative pattern at the top and bottom. There are several lines of Japanese text written vertically on the right side of the image, accompanied by a red seal or stamp.
